  Parenting Question of the Week
Question: Does ADHD Go Away?

Answer: Once upon a time, doctors thought that ADHD would just go away. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Adults who had ADHD as a child (but were never treated) are far more likely to have experienced problems completing high school (much less college), tended to have difficulty on the job, and struggled to control their weight and avoid excessive use of alcohol and other drugs. Patients who had ADHD as kids but were treated may have fewer problems, but are still likely to have functional problems related to loss of attention or difficulties controlling their emotions. Because we now know that ADHD is a genetically based condition that persists into adulthood, arranging for treatment as an adult can make life so much easier and more productive. If you wonder about the possibility that you have ADHD, take our online test. If your score is 6 or greater, you should discuss these results with your physician and begin treatment. If you are interested, Adult Coaching is available, information can be requested on our Coaching for Adults page.
